ViscoTec Pumpen- und Dosiertechnik GmbH, a leading international fluid and dosing technology company based in Töging, Germany, is committed to meeting its environmental responsibilities and actively contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases. In cooperation with the Char2Cool e.V. non-profit association from Reisbach (Dingolfing-Landau), ViscoTec is implementing pioneering measures in the field of environmental protection and climate compensation.
The challenges of climate change are omnipresent and require cross-industry efforts to minimize the global environmental impact. ViscoTec recognizes the urgency and has decided to actively contribute to reducing emissions. The company’s collaboration with Char2Cool e.V., a pioneer in the conversion of water hyacinth into climate-friendly plant-based charcoal, illustrates its commitment to sustainable solutions.
The water hyacinth, an invasive plant species with devastating effects on the environment, has not only negative ecological but also climate-damaging effects. In Africa in particular, this plant causes both ecological and economic damage due to the enormous speed at which it spreads in lakes. For example, it prevents access to the lake and thus drives local fishermen into poverty. The rotting of the plants by bacteria also produces methane, an extremely potent greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to global warming. If the water hyacinths are instead fished out of the water, dried and charred, no methane will be set free. Instead, valuable plant charcoal is produced, which stores the carbon over the long term, preventing it from being released into the atmosphere. In local communities, this nutrient-rich and water-storing plant-based charcoal can be used as a soil conditioner and provides food security and an income for the people. This pragmatic and highly effective approach is what Char2Cool is using to address global issues through local action.
